Understanding Herniated Disc Injuries
Between the vertebrae in our spine are round discs containing a liquid that cushions the bones like shock absorbers during our everyday movements. When these discs suffer trauma in accidents or a workplace injury, the liquid can leak out causing friction as bones grind against each other. Bulges or weak spots in a disc can place pressure on nearby nerve roots resulting in pain throughout a person's body. A herniated disc can pinch a nerve in the spine causing what is often described as a shooting pain in a particular area of the body, such as an arm or hand from a cervical herniated disc in the neck, or in a leg or foot in a lumbar herniation in the lower back.
Proper diagnosis of a herniated disc isn't possible using standard x-rays. These injuries require sensitive diagnostic tests using computerized axial tomography (CAT or CT) scans, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and other expensive technology. Because there is little agreement among physicians about how to label disc injuries, they can go by many names including:
- herniated disc
- ruptured disc
- disc protrusion
- slipped disc
- collapsed disc
- torn disc
How Can We Help You?
Regardless of what your disc injury is called, it can be painful and sometimes disabling. It is also important to remember that there is no clear connection between the severity of a herniated disc and the pain a victim experiences. Our goal is to determine the extent of your injury, its impact on your ability to perform your job and quality of life, and to help you recover the appropriate compensation you need and deserve, including workers' comp, insurance and other possible legal settlements or jury awards from third party claims.
